A Day in the Life at Equity Nepal: Empowering Visually Impaired Children

Nestled in Kathmandu’s peaceful Tarkeshwor area, Equity Nepal is a residence for 20 visually impaired children from needy backgrounds.

Our goal is simple: With a mission to improve the quality of life for these children and foster inclusivity in education, Equity Nepal is dedicated to helping them overcome obstacles and reach their full potential.

As of Feb 16, 2024,  At Equity Nepal, we are proudly serving as a home to 20 children, with 16 currently residing in our hostel. The other four have graduated or moved out to pursue their careers and goals. They are great examples of the independence and strength we try to teach all of our children. Additionally, we have 18 regular school-going children, and six of our students are currently learning braille to prepare for their school journey.

Our impact extends beyond those under our roof. We support an additional 7 children living with their families or relatives outside the hostel. These children attend school together with the hostel students.

Here’s a glimpse into what a typical day looks like at Equity Nepal.

Overview of Equity Nepal

Located at Tarkeshwor 5, Kathmandu, Equity Nepal provides a nurturing home for 20 visually impaired children from poor family backgrounds. Our organization is committed to creating a world where visually impaired children have equal opportunities for education, support, and success. Our goal is to empower these children to become confident, independent, and active members of society.

Day-to-Day Operations

At Equity Nepal, each day begins with the children waking up at 5:30 in the morning. Some start their day with yoga, while others engage in physical exercises for half an hour, preparing themselves for the day ahead. The morning continues with a hearty breakfast prepared by our kitchen staff. The day follows by providing the children with the nourishment they need to thrive.

Morning classes are held from 6:30 to 8:30 am, alternating between English and mathematics on a three-day rotation. With dedicated teachers guiding them, the children delve into their studies, eager to learn and grow. At 9:00 am, it’s time for dal bhat, a staple of Nepali cuisine, before the children head off to school at 9:30.

Upon returning from school, the younger children, up to kindergarten, arrive back at 3:30 in the afternoon, while the older ones join them at 4:00. Twice a week, in the evening, the children enjoy music and computer classes, enriching their education and expanding their horizons.

After a day filled with learning and laughter, the children gather for snacks before dinner at 7:00 pm. With satisfied stomachs, they dedicate their evenings to homework and self-study, honing their skills and pursuing their passions until bedtime at 10:00 pm.
